Mahogany Bay Cruise Port

Honduras’ Mahogany Bay cruise port is a top-rated cruise ship destination thanks to its beautiful nature, many outdoor activities, and fun, family-friendly excursions. Located on Roatan Island, one of Honduras’ largest islands, it’s a must-see destination and sure to be one of your favorite cruise ports.

Port Overview

Mahogany Bay is a private island port owned by Carnival, although another port is nearby for general cruise traffic. You’ll almost certainly dock at their port if you’re sailing with Carnival. Carnival, Princess Cruise, and Costa Cruise ships dock at the Port of Roatan, and other lines, including Norwegian Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean, dock at Coxen hole port.

Both piers are exceptionally busy, full of shops and dining, and have beaches and natural excursions right nearby. In addition, you’ll find a Duty Free Shop at Mahogany Bay Cruise port and people offering tours deeper into the island. You can purchase excursions on shore or on your boat, but be advised that the ship isn’t guaranteed to wait for you if you opt for a non-cruise-sanctioned tour.

Sightseeing and Activities

Mahogany Bay itself is idyllic, so you might be tempted to stretch out on a lounge chair in the sand and enjoy the brilliant waters beyond the shore. The beaches are absolutely stunning, and most are right next to where the cruise ships dock.

You’ll find air-conditioned cabanas with hammocks, WiFI, and seaside service on Mahogany Beach. These cabanas are relatively popular and tend to book quickly during the high season, so make your reservations with Carnival or one of its participating sister lines well in advance. Cabana tickets also include access to Mahogany Bay’s famous chairlift.

Nature Trail

If you have some time and don’t mind veering a bit off the beaten course, you can always take Mahogany Bay’s nature trail. This trail takes you away from the cruise dock to a less-traversed beach in another part of the bay. You’ll still be close enough to the cruise dock to get back in plenty of time, but you’ll probably see fewer people.

Plus, the nature trail is stunning. You’ll see lots of local flowers and plants and possibly even be able to spot an animal or two. Plus, it’s incredibly scenic and the ideal place to snap those great vacation pictures. The trail is primarily flat and very accessible.

Ride the Magic Flying Chairlift

One of the undisputed highlights of Mahogany Bay, the Magic Flying Chairlift is right near the cruise dock and gives passengers a unique and breathtaking view of the bay beyond. It’s also the best way to travel between the cruise center and the beach. Although you can certainly walk to the beach, riding the chairlift is a memorable, fun experience.

Zip Lining

If you’re craving more adrenaline and want to check out the tree canopy above Mahogany Bay cruise port, zip-lining should be on the top of your list. Mahogany Bay’s zip line cuts across the island, making stops at different beaches and excursions.

You can book zip-lining tickets on the ship or when you arrive at the port. Unfortunately, like most of the more popular excursions, this one sells out, so book in advance.

Snorkeling in and Around Mahogany Bay

Mahogany Bay is near a coral reef, so there’s plenty of marine life in the waters around the island, including West Bay and Mahogany Bay. Strap on your mask and snorkel and check out the schools of tropical fish that call these balmy waters their home.

If you’re new to snorkeling or want to take it easy, you can see plenty of marine life right off the shore. Those looking for something a little more advanced can check out Starfish Alley or West End Reef. There are also kayaking, dolphin excursions, and catamaran tours available.

Shopping and Food

You’ll find plenty of shopping and dining options right off the cruise port itself. These shops run the gamut from higher-end options to locally-produced souvenirs and are perfect for any style, budget, or taste. There are also several restaurants nearby, including beachfront venues, so you can savor a delicious meal once you’ve finished up your shopping.

Nearby Beaches To Check Out

Although spending the entire day on Mahogany Bay isn’t a bad idea, there are plenty of other nearby beaches to explore. Some of these spots are more off-the-beaten-path and less trendy than Mahogany Bay itself, so if you’re looking for a little bit of peace, quiet, and maximum chilling out, put one or more of them on your list.

Little French Key

This beach is on a private island with great waters, perfect for snorkeling. You’ll have to take a small boat to get there, which you can book on your cruise or when you dock in Mahogany Bay. Little French Key famously has white, almost sugary sand beaches and tends to be slightly less crowded than some other beaches.

Mahogany Bay Beach

Mahogany Bay Beach is an exclusive beach that you can only visit if you’re a passenger of a Carnival cruise or one of their supporting sister cruise lines. It’s one of the most accessible beaches, too, since it’s right near the port itself. So enjoy snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking in the blue water, or simply relaxing right on the sand.

Although there are lounge chairs on the beach, you’ll have to get there early to secure your spot.

West Bay Beach

Cruise ship patrons will find some of the best snorkeling in Mahogany Bay at West Bay beach. You’ll also find gorgeous white-sand beaches and lots of water activities. Adults and children over four years old will have to pay to access the beach, but it’s undoubtedly well worth it. West Bay Beach is a short drive from the cruise terminal, so make sure you arrange a ride back in ample time.

Other Things To Do

If chilling out on the beach isn’t your thing, you’ll find plenty of other things to do in Mahogany Bay. Diving lessons are available, and you can book them right on the ship itself. Additionally, there’s Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout on French Cay. You and your family can learn about these fascinating creatures and even safely interact with them.

For those craving a more luxurious experience, there’s an exclusive beach club about half an hour from the cruise port. Enjoy unparalleled pampering, drink service, and luxe beach chairs with beautiful views of the sea.

There are also chocolate tours. You can learn all about the history of chocolate on the island and even have the chance to make your own and sample local specialties. Chocolate tours are a unique way to support the local economy and learn something new and exciting while on your cruise. Plus, you can pick up some unique souvenirs for friends and family back home.

Currency

The national currency of Honduras is the Honduran Lempira, however, all local shops, restaurants, and excursions accept US dollars, and there are plenty of ATMs all around the island, although you will have a withdrawal fee depending on your bank. Since many banks flag foreign transactions and can freeze cards and accounts if they suspect suspicious activity, it’s essential to let your bank know where you’ll be going so as not to get locked out of your funds in Mahogany Bay.

Cruise Lines That Sail Here

Mahogany Bay is an exclusive cruise port for Carnival cruises and the company’s sister lines. All Carnival cruises dock there, plus Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises, and Holland America Cruises. Check your cruise itinerary in advance to see if you’re scheduled to land in Mahogany Bay.

There’s no doubt that a trip to Mahogany Bay will be one of the highlights of your family cruise vacation. From the serene, crystal blue waters surrounding the port to the plethora of different things to do and see, there’s something for everyone at this idyllic port.
